You get the punch, density, and sustain of aggressive compression while keeping the natural dynamics and transients of the dry track. It’s sometimes called “New York compression,” and it’s a staple on drums, vocals, and full mixes.
The core idea: instead of choosing between “dynamic but weak” and “compressed but flat,” you get both at once.
Why parallel compression works
Normal (serial) compression clamps down on your signal directly. Push it hard and you get power, but you also flatten the transients — the initial hit of a snare, the attack of a consonant — that give a track life. Back off, and you keep the life but lose the density.
Parallel compression sidesteps the tradeoff. The dry signal keeps all its natural punch and dynamics. The heavily compressed copy fills in the space underneath, raising the quiet details and adding sustain and body. Blend the two and you hear a track that’s both punchy and full.
How to Set Up Parallel Compression
There are two common ways to do it.
Method 1 — Aux send (the classic approach):
- Create an auxiliary (bus) track.
- Send your drum, vocal, or mix bus to that aux.
- Put a compressor on the aux and compress hard. A high ratio (around 4:1 to 10:1) and 6–10 dB or more of gain reduction.
- Slowly blend the compressed aux underneath the dry track until it adds weight without taking over.
Method 2 — Wet/dry mix knob: Many modern compressors have a built-in mix or blend control. Set the compressor to compress aggressively, then dial the mix knob back so you’re blending compressed and dry within a single plugin. Faster to set up, same principle.
Where to Use It
Drums. The classic use. A crushed parallel bus under your drum kit adds thickness and makes the whole kit feel bigger and more aggressive, while the dry drums keep their snap.
Vocals. Parallel compression raises the quiet consonants and breaths so every word stays present, without the pumping you’d get from compressing the lead vocal that hard directly.
Master or mix bus. A subtle parallel compression bus across the full mix can add density and cohesion while preserving the mix’s dynamics.
